Ottawa home buyers can have the “The Smart Choice” with an Urbandale Construction Home – A home built to the highest quality standards, incorporating intelligent design and energy efficiency that’s friendly to the environment.
R-2000 & ENERGY STAR® STANDARDS
For over 35 years, Urbandale Construction has been a leader in environmentally conscious construction. Our philosophy is that energy efficiency is the result of building high quality homes with superior technologies and designs.
Urbandale has received numerous accolades for our industry leading designs, including local and national news coverage on our environmental leadership. In 2005, Urbandale won the Ontario ENERGY STAR® Builder of the Year Award, and in 2008, we were named the R-2000 Builder of the Year by EnerQuality. In 2012, Urbandale was honoured for building the first home in Canada to the updated 2012 R-2000 Standard by The Honourable Gordon O’Connor, Chief Government Whip, Minister of State and M.P. for Carleton-Mississippi Mills (on behalf of The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources) and the President of the Canadian Home Builder’s Association.
Urbandale is leading the industry by building homes to the ENERGY STAR® Standard. The ENERGY STAR® initiative is administered by Natural Resources Canada to promote homes that are at least 20% more energy efficient than a house built to code.
An Urbandale ENERGY STAR® home is a higher quality home.
We achieve our high levels of energy efficiency through attention to detail during the construction process, and by specifying the highest quality equipment and materials. We also require additional inspections throughout the building process to ensure each home is built to the highest standards.
An Urbandale ENERGY STAR® home is a smart investment. An ENERGY STAR® home will save you money on your monthly energy bills and protect you against rising energy costs, while being better for the environment.
An Urbandale ENERGY STAR® home will:
- Reduce your energy costs compared to a house built to code
- Be more comfortable to live in, with no drafts and a warm and dry basement
- Ensure improved indoor air quality
Urbandale Construction has been a long time supporter of the R-2000 program. R-2000 is a voluntary standard administered by Natural Resources Canada to promote “Best-in-Class” construction for new homes. R-2000 homes use 50% less energy than houses built to code, have improved indoor air quality, and are more comfortable to live in. R-2000 homes are also third-party verified and go through the most demanding quality assurance process in the industry.
In 2009, Urbandale Construction won the R-2000 Builder of the Year Award, and in 2010, we were honoured when Natural Resources Canada chose Urbandale as an example of a better builder for their educational video on energy efficient construction techniques and the R-2000 program. You can view the video on the NRCan website.
In 2012, the R-2000 program was updated and Urbandale played a key leadership role by building the first home in Canada to the new standard. At Urbandale’s grand opening of the demonstration home, NRCan announced the launch of the new program along with The Honourable Gordon O’Connor, Chief Government Whip, Minister of State and M.P. for Carleton-Mississippi Mills (on behalf of The Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources), and the President of the Canadian Home Builders Association, Ron Olsen.
“They (Urbandale) offer it to customers with passion and enthusiasm… which comes from knowing that they are building the best houses in the world.”
President, Canadian Home Builders Association

Carleton University Partnership
Urbandale Construction is proud to support research and development into future housing technologies through our ongoing partnership with Carleton University.
Since 2009, Urbandale has been working with the fourth year engineering students in the High Performance Housing Group. The students have taken Urbandale home designs and studied the most cost effective energy efficiency options. We have incorporated many of their ideas and suggestions in our standard ENERGY STAR® home designs, as well as our R-2000 upgrade.
Urbandale has also made the commitment to donate a home to be built on the Carleton University campus. This home will be used as a research lab for post-graduate students. It is our hope that this research will help to move the industry forward and promote innovation in housing designs.
